Etymology
Murāqaba is the verbal noun of the Form III verb rāqaba, 'to watch or observe.' Both come from the Semitic root r-q-b, which carries the sense of watching, guarding, and waiting. The same root gives raqaba, 'neck,' from the image of craning the neck to keep watch. In modern Arabic the word covers everything from CCTV to medical monitoring.
