Etymology
Salām comes from the Semitic root s-l-m, which carries the sense of being whole, sound, and safe. From that root Arabic also built the words Islam and Muslim. The same root gives Hebrew shalom and Aramaic shlama, both meaning peace. There is no Indo-European source; the word is native Semitic.
