Etymology
مُسْتَوَى comes from the triliteral root س-و-ي, which carries the sense of being equal, even, and level. It is the passive participle of the Form VIII verb اِسْتَوَى, meaning to be level or settled. So the noun first pointed to a flat or even surface, a plane. From there it grew to mean a degree or standard, as in a level of skill or a standard of living.
