Etymology

مُنْتَصَف comes from the triliteral root ن-ص-ف, which carries the idea of a half. It is built on the Form VIII verb اِنْتَصَفَ, 'to reach the middle,' and names the point where something is halved in time or place. The same root gives نِصْف, 'half,' and إنْصاف, 'fairness,' the act of giving each side an equal share.
