Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root r-f-ḍ. Its older sense was to leave or let loose, as a herder lets his camels scatter to graze. From letting go the meaning shifted to casting aside, and then to the modern sense of refusing or rejecting. A noun from the same root, al-Rāfiḍa, later became a sectarian label.
