Etymology
أَصْل comes from the Semitic root ʔ-ṣ-l, which carries the sense of being firmly rooted. The noun names the root, origin, or foundation from which something grows or derives. From the same root Arabic builds words for authenticity (أَصالة) and for what is original or genuine (أَصْليّ). The word was later borrowed into Persian, Turkish, Urdu, and other languages as asl or asıl.
