Etymology

تَأَخَّر comes from the Semitic root ʾ-kh-r, which carries the sense of being behind or coming after. It is the Form V (تَفَعَّل) verb built on the Form II أَخَّرَ, 'to delay something,' so its reflexive meaning is 'to delay oneself,' that is, to be late. The same root yields آخِر, 'last,' and أُخْرَى, 'other.' Cognate roots run across the Semitic family, such as Hebrew אַחַר, 'after.'
