Etymology

The word comes from the triliteral Semitic root و-ق-ف (w-q-f), which carries the idea of standing and stopping. It is the Form V derivation (تَفَعَّلَ), built by adding the prefix تَـ and doubling the middle consonant. Form V gives a reflexive, middle sense: to bring oneself to a stop. The same root yields the noun وَقْف (waqf), an Islamic endowment that is 'held' or fixed in place.
