Etymology

حَبَل comes from the Semitic root ح-ب-ل, whose core sense is to bind or tie. The same root gives Arabic حَبْل, meaning rope or cord, since a rope binds things together. حَبَل extends this to the state of carrying a child, the bond between a woman and the life growing inside her. This is a Semitic root, not an Indo-European one, so no PIE root applies.
