Etymology
أَفَاد comes from the Semitic root ف ي د, which carries the sense of gain, profit, or use. The base form فَادَ means to gain or profit. The fourth verb form, أَفْعَلَ, adds a causative sense, so أَفَاد means to cause someone to gain, that is, to benefit them or to supply them with useful information. In modern journalism the word narrowed toward the sense of a source stating or reporting a fact.
