Etymology
أَخِيراً comes from the triliteral Semitic root ء-خ-ر, which carries the sense of being behind or coming after. The same root gives آخِر, meaning last or other, and تَأَخَّرَ, meaning to be late. أخيراً is the accusative adverbial form of أخير, last or final, built with the tanwin fatha ending that Arabic uses to turn many adjectives into manner adverbs. Arabic is a Semitic language, so this root has no Indo-European ancestor.
