The word is a quadriliteral noun built on the Arabic root ع-ن-ك-ب, with no separate triliteral verb behind it. It has denoted the spider since the earliest recorded Classical Arabic and gives its name to the 29th chapter of the Quran, Surat al-Ankabut, The Spider.
