Etymology

مُقارَنَة comes from the Semitic root ق-ر-ن (q-r-n), which carries the core sense of joining or pairing two things. The verb قارَنَ, in the Form III pattern used for actions done between two parties, means to set one thing alongside another. مُقارَنَة is the verbal noun of that verb, so it names the act itself: the comparison.
