Etymology
خَلَق comes from the Semitic triliteral root kh-l-q, a root native to Arabic rather than borrowed. Its core sense is bringing something into existence from nothing or shaping it into a new form. The root is old and well attested in Classical Arabic and the Quran, where it is used above all for divine acts of creation. It later broadened in Modern Standard Arabic to cover secular acts of creating or originating, such as creating jobs or problems.
