Etymology
The root س ت ر (s-t-r) is a native Semitic root meaning to cover, screen, or hide. It has no link to Indo-European vocabulary, so it carries no PIE root. Hebrew keeps the same root with the same sense, which points to a shared ancestor deep in Semitic. Words like sitr (veil) and sitara (curtain) grow from this root and keep its core image: a physical screen placed between something and view.
