Etymology

مُطِيع comes from the Semitic root ط-و-ع, which carries the sense of yielding or complying. The verb أَطَاعَ (Form IV) means to obey, and مُطِيع is its active participle, literally the one who is doing the obeying. The same root gives طَاعَة, obedience, and later shifted in Form V to describe volunteering, since a volunteer is someone who yields to a task willingly.
