Etymology

Khuluq comes from the Semitic root kh-l-q, the same root that gives Arabic khalq, meaning creation or physical form. Classical grammarians drew a direct contrast: khalq is what a person looks like on the outside, khuluq is what a person is like on the inside. Over time khuluq narrowed to mean the inner shape of a person, their character and moral disposition.
