The verb comes from the Semitic root ع-ل-م (ʕ-l-m), which carries the sense of knowing. The base verb عَلِمَ means to know, and doubling the middle root letter produces the Form II verb عَلَّم, a causative pattern meaning to make someone know, that is, to teach. This same root gives Arabic its words for knowledge, science, and scholar.
