Etymology

غاز is a modern loanword that entered Arabic in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries from French gaz or English gas. The European word was coined around 1640 by the Flemish chemist Jan Baptista van Helmont, who based it on Greek khaos, meaning empty space. The word has no native Arabic root and is treated as a borrowed stem.
