Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root gh-r-m, which carries the sense of incurring loss, debt, or liability. Classical Arabic built several nouns from this root, including gharāma for a fine and gharām for consuming passion, since both describe a burden one cannot easily shake off. The same root gave rise to mughram, meaning someone liable to pay or, by extension, someone hopelessly smitten.
