Etymology

The word is a nisba adjective built from كِيمِيَاء (kīmiyāʾ), meaning chemistry or alchemy. The Arabic noun itself was borrowed, most likely from Greek khēmeia. The suffix ـِيّ turns the noun into an adjective meaning 'relating to chemistry.' The same Arabic noun, carried into Europe through medieval Latin, gave English 'alchemy' and later 'chemistry.'
