Etymology
Mawrid comes from the Arabic root w-r-d, tied to the verb warada, meaning to arrive at or approach, especially a water source. Mawrid is a noun-of-place formed with the prefix mim, so it names the spot where one arrives, originally a well or watering hole. Over time the sense widened from a physical water source to any point of supply, and then to resources in general. This is a native Semitic formation, not linked to Indo-European vocabulary.
