Etymology
هُبُوط is the verbal noun of the Arabic verb هَبَطَ (habaṭa), meaning to go down or descend. The root ه-ب-ط carries the core sense of lowering or coming down from a height, and Arabic extends it to both physical descent, such as an aircraft landing, and abstract decline, such as a market losing value. Arabic belongs to the Semitic language family, not the Indo-European one, so there is no shared root with English words for descending.
