The word comes from the Arabic noun يَد (yad), meaning hand. Arabic forms relational adjectives with the nisba suffix -ِيّ, but because يد is a short, historically biradical noun, an extra glide و is inserted before the suffix, giving يَدَوِيّ rather than the expected يَدِيّ. The result means, literally, of the hand, and by extension, done by hand or manual. This irregular pattern also shows up in the dual and some plural forms of يد.
