Etymology
يَمِين comes from the Semitic root ي-م-ن, which ties together the right side, the right hand, and good fortune. The right hand was the strong and auspicious hand, so the same word also came to mean a sworn oath, which was sealed by clasping right hands. The country name اليَمَن (Yemen) shares the root and marks the land that lay to the right when one faced the rising sun. Hebrew יָמִין and Aramaic yammīnā keep the same meanings.
