Etymology

Άνοιξη descends from the ancient Greek noun ἄνοιξις, meaning an opening. That noun comes from the verb ἀνοίγω, to open, itself formed from the prefix ἀνά (up) and an old verb for opening. Greek speakers came to use this word for spring because it is the season when the earth opens up and plants and flowers push through. The shift from an abstract word for opening to the name of a season happened gradually in later Greek.
