Etymology

Μητρώο goes back to the ancient Μητρῷον, the temple of the Mother of the Gods (Cybele) in the Athenian agora. That temple also served as the city's state archive, so its name came to mean the place where official records were kept. Modern Greek shortened the adjective μητρῷον into the neuter noun μητρώο, keeping the sense of an official record book. The word still carries its root meaning of 'mother,' since the Metroon was literally the shrine of the Mother.
