Etymology
Greek borrowed φρέσκο directly from Italian fresco, the same word used in English for this painting technique. The Italian word originally meant "fresh," because the artist paints on plaster while it is still wet. Italian fresco traces back to a Germanic root meaning "fresh," carried into Vulgar Latin and then into Italian. Modern Greek uses it both as this borrowed noun and, separately, as its own adjective φρέσκος meaning "fresh."
