Etymology

Δημοφιλής is a compound of δήμος (the people, the populace) and the adjectival stem of φίλος (dear, loved). Literally it means loved by the people. Δήμος also gives English words such as democracy and demographic. The deeper origin of both δήμος and φίλος is debated among etymologists, and some scholars treat them as pre-Greek rather than inherited Indo-European vocabulary, so no secure root is given here.
