Word family
Etymology
Αφότου comes from Ancient Greek ἀφ' ὅτου, a fusion of the preposition ἀπό (from) and ὅτου, the genitive singular of the relative pronoun ὅστις (that which, whoever). Together the phrase meant 'from that which', and it settled into a fixed temporal expression meaning 'since'. The word has stayed largely unchanged in form and meaning from antiquity to Modern Greek.
