Etymology
From Ancient Greek εὐλογέω, a compound of εὖ ('well, good') and the root of λόγος/λέγω ('word, to speak'), so literally 'to speak well of, to praise.' In the Septuagint and New Testament it took on the religious sense 'to bless,' translating Hebrew בָּרַךְ (bārak). Latin benedīcere ('bene' + 'dīcere', well + speak) is a parallel calque rather than a genetic relative.
