Etymology
Borrowed into Greek from Ottoman Turkish 'belâ' meaning trouble, calamity or misfortune. The Turkish word is itself a loan from Arabic 'balāʾ' (بلاء), 'trial, affliction, ordeal'. Like many Turkish-era loans it settled into colloquial Greek as a vivid everyday word for a hassle or nuisance.
