Etymology

γερουσιαστής is a Modern Greek formation from γερουσία ('senate'), the deliberative upper council, plus the agentive suffix -αστής that marks a member or doer. γερουσία itself derives from γέρων ('old man, elder'), reflecting the ancient notion of rule by a council of elders. The underlying root goes back to PIE *ǵerh₂- 'to grow old, ripen', which also gives Greek γῆρας 'old age' and the learned borrowings 'gerontology' and 'geriatric'.
