From Ancient Greek διαρκέω, a compound of the prefix διά- ('through, throughout') and ἀρκέω ('to suffice, hold out, ward off'). The literal sense 'to be sufficient all the way through' developed into 'to hold out over time', i.e. 'to last'. The modern contracted verb διαρκώ preserves this temporal meaning directly.
