Etymology
From Medieval and Ancient Greek σχοινίον, the diminutive of σχοῖνος, which denoted the rush or reed plant and, by extension, the cords and ropes plaited from it. As rope-making shifted away from rushes, the name of the material stayed with the product. The plant noun σχοῖνος is itself of pre-Greek, non-Indo-European origin, so its deeper ancestry is unknown.
