Word family
Etymology
The word comes from Ancient Greek ὑποψήφιος, built from ὑπό (under, subject to) and ψῆφος (pebble, vote). In Athenian assemblies citizens voted by casting pebbles, so someone ὑποψήφιος was literally a person put to that vote. The sense narrowed over time to mean anyone standing for election or selection, and Modern Greek kept the word largely unchanged.
