Etymology
The word comes from Ιταλία (Italy) plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, a common pattern for forming nationality adjectives in Greek. The name Italia itself traces back to Latin Italia, of disputed pre-Roman origin, possibly linked to an Oscan word for calf or bull, used by ancient peoples in the southern part of the peninsula. Greek borrowed the place name in antiquity and later attached its own adjectival ending.
