Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek ὄροφος, meaning roof or thatch, and is tied to the noun ὀροφή, roof or ceiling. Over time the sense shifted from the covering itself to a full level of a building, since each floor sits under its own ceiling. Modern Greek kept the old form but narrowed its everyday meaning to storey.
