Etymology
From Ancient Greek ὀροφή (orophḗ) 'roof, ceiling', a derivative of the verb ἐρέφω (eréphō) 'to cover with a roof, to roof over'. The noun thus names the covering structure overhead. Beekes treats the underlying root as of Pre-Greek origin with no secure Indo-European etymology.
