Etymology

Συνοδός is an ancient compound of συν- (together, with) and ὁδός (road, way, journey). It originally described someone who travels the road together with another person, hence companion or escort. The related noun σύνοδος (a coming together) passed into English directly as synod. The root ὁδός itself is of uncertain, likely pre-Greek origin, so no secure Indo-European root can be given.
