Etymology
The word joins the prefix παρά- (beside, around) to κάμψη (a bending), which comes from the verb κάμπτω (to bend, to curve). It originally named a curved path that goes around an obstacle instead of through it. Modern Greek keeps that sense for a road bypass or detour, and extends it to medicine, for a bypass procedure, and to figurative use, for getting around a rule.
