Βουλευτής comes from the verb βουλεύω, to deliberate or sit in council, which in turn comes from βουλή, meaning council, plan, or will. The agent suffix -τής marks the person who performs an action, so the word literally names one who deliberates. In ancient Athens it denoted a member of the βουλή, the city council that prepared business for the assembly. In modern Greek it simply means an elected member of parliament. Linguists do not agree on a secure Indo-European root for βουλή, so none is given here.
