Etymology
Σπορ is a direct loan from English "sport", adopted into Modern Greek with its foreign spelling and pronunciation kept intact. English "sport" itself comes from Old French "desport" (amusement, pastime), from Latin "deportare" (to carry away, divert). Because Greek borrowed the word whole, it never gained native Greek endings and stayed indeclinable. It sits alongside the older, native Greek term "αθλητισμός" for the same broad idea.
