Etymology
Χαμπάρι entered Greek from Turkish haber, meaning news or report. Turkish itself took the word from Arabic khabar, with the same meaning. It spread into Greek during the centuries of Ottoman rule and settled as an ordinary, informal noun for news or a piece of information. The common idiom παίρνω χαμπάρι, literally 'I take news', came to mean simply 'I notice' or 'I catch on'.
