Etymology

The word joins πῦρ, fire, with τέχνη, craft or skill, and adds the suffix -μα, which turns a verb or craft into its product, as in πρόβλημα, a thing put forward. So πυροτέχνημα means, literally, a product of fire-craft. Modern Greek uses it as the ordinary word for a firework, the same roots English borrowed for pyrotechnic.
