Etymology

Deși is a fusion of two older Romanian words: de ("of, from") and și ("and, also, even"). Speakers welded the two into a single subordinating conjunction used to introduce a concession, much like English packed "al" and "though" into "although". The word și itself goes back to Latin sic ("thus, so"), which also gave Italian sì and Spanish sí.
