Etymology

Romanian borrowed dietă from French diète in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped modern Romanian vocabulary. French diète itself descends from Latin diaeta, a term for a prescribed way of living or eating, which in turn came from Greek diaita, meaning mode of life or regimen. The word's root sense was broader than food alone: it covered a whole regulated lifestyle before narrowing to eating habits.
