Etymology
Romanian borrowed "porter" directly from English, where it names a dark, strong beer style that emerged in London in the early 1700s. The English name is a shortened form of "porter's beer", because street and river porters, laborers who carried goods for a living, favored it. That sense of "porter" (carrier) came from French "porteur", from Latin "portare", to carry. Romanian took over only the finished beer term, not the older "carrier" sense.
