Etymology
Romanian borrowed "fenomen" from French "phénomène" in the nineteenth century, as part of a broad wave of French loanwords that modernized Romanian's scientific and intellectual vocabulary. French took the word from Late Latin "phaenomenon", which came from Greek "phainomenon", the present participle of "phainesthai", meaning "to appear" or "to be shown". The core sense has stayed stable across all these languages: something that appears or manifests itself, especially something observable and notable.
