Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root ḍ-y-ʿ, which carries the sense of being lost, missing, or neglected. The base form ضَاعَ means simply to be lost. Form IV, أَضَاعَ, adds a causative prefix, turning that intransitive sense into a transitive one: to cause something to be lost, that is, to lose it or waste it.
